In a major push toward strengthening India’s self-reliance in defence technology, the Government of Odisha has approved a ₹300 crore investment proposal by IG Defence to establish an advanced drone manufacturing hub in Ganjam district.
The project received clearance during the 144th meeting of the State Level Single Window Clearance Authority (SLSWCA), chaired by Chief Secretary Anu Garg, marking a significant step in expanding India’s indigenous unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) production capacity.
Advanced Drone Manufacturing Facility Planned
The proposed facility will focus on producing tactical UAVs, mission-specific unmanned aerial systems, and electronic warfare-enabled drone platforms. The investment is among the largest private sector defence technology initiatives in Odisha, reinforcing the state’s growing role in India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.
Officials said the hub is designed to support large-scale production, rapid prototyping, and advanced testing of next-generation drone technologies for defence applications.
Strategic Location Near Key Defence Infrastructure
Ganjam has been chosen for its proximity to major defence research and testing infrastructure, including facilities of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the Ordnance Factory network, and the AD Gopalpur test range.
This strategic positioning is expected to enable seamless integration of research, development, and testing processes, reducing production timelines and enhancing operational readiness.
IG Defence’s Role in Indigenous Drone Technology
IG Defence, formerly known as IG Drones, is recognised for developing unmanned systems tailored to real-world operational environments. Its portfolio includes tactical drones, counter-drone technologies, and FPV kamikaze drones, several of which have already been inducted by Indian defence forces.
The company has also secured orders for over 5,000 FPV kamikaze striker drones from multiple defence forces, reflecting growing confidence in domestically developed platforms.
Strengthening ‘Make in India’ and Atmanirbhar Bharat
The project aligns closely with national initiatives such as Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat, aimed at reducing dependence on imported defence equipment while building domestic manufacturing capacity.
By enabling large-scale indigenous production of UAVs and related technologies, the hub is expected to enhance India’s defence preparedness and potentially position the country as an exporter of advanced unmanned systems to friendly nations, subject to regulatory approvals.

Economic and Industrial Impact
Beyond defence capability, the facility is expected to generate employment, attract ancillary industries, and accelerate Odisha’s emergence as a high-technology manufacturing destination. The initiative highlights the state’s strategic intent to integrate advanced manufacturing with national security priorities while contributing to long-term industrial growth.
