The Indian government has begun taking initial steps to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) technologies across key governance and administrative functions, marking an early phase of a broader push towards AI-enabled public administration. The developments were reported on December 23, 2025.
According to officials, AI tools are being explored for use in areas such as data forecasting, transcription of public service interactions, disease diagnosis support, and process optimisation within government systems. The objective is to improve efficiency, decision-making, and service delivery across departments.

The focus at this stage is on pilot-level adoption, where AI applications can support officials without replacing human oversight. Government agencies are assessing how AI-driven analytics can assist in planning, predicting service demand, and streamlining routine administrative tasks.

In the health sector, AI-based tools are being examined for their potential to support early disease detection and diagnosis, while in governance workflows, automated transcription and data processing systems are expected to reduce manual workloads and turnaround times.
An official familiar with the initiative said, “The aim is to use AI as a support system for governance, improving accuracy and efficiency while ensuring accountability remains with human decision-makers.”

The move aligns with India’s broader digital governance agenda and is expected to evolve gradually, with frameworks around data security, ethical use, and transparency likely to shape future deployments. Further guidelines and structured implementation plans are expected to be rolled out as pilot projects mature and assessments are completed.
