Jodhpur DISCOM

Rajasthan continues to consolidate its position as a national powerhouse in renewable energy, driven by transformative initiatives in solar expansion, energy storage, and citizen- and employee-centric reforms. From record solar achievements under the PM-KUSUM scheme to accelerated rooftop solar adoption in major cities, alongside critical advancements in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and welfare measures for DISCOM personnel, the state’s energy landscape is undergoing historic change.

PM-KUSUM: Jodhpur DISCOM Crosses 2000 MW, Enabling Rural Transformation

The Jodhpur DISCOM has achieved a landmark feat under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-KUSUM), with its combined solar capacity under Components A and C surpassing 2017.33 MW—a record-setting accomplishment in Rajasthan and a significant milestone at the national level. This achievement not only reflects the region’s expanding renewable footprint but also signals a deeper economic transformation unfolding across rural communities.

According to Managing Director Dr. Bhanwarlal, the KUSUM-A component has already facilitated the installation of 240 decentralised solar plants with a collective capacity of 336.25 MW. By enabling farmers to lease land or sell surplus power, the initiative has opened new avenues of steady income amid fluctuating agricultural returns.

Equally impactful, KUSUM-C has emerged as one of the country’s largest networks of clean and uninterrupted energy. The installation of 639 solar plants (1681.08 MW) and 84,088 solar pumps has dramatically reduced reliance on diesel for irrigation. As a result, irrigation costs have declined sharply, and farmers are now better able to plan crop cycles without the uncertainty of fuel availability or fluctuating prices.

Importantly, the ripple effects extend far beyond agriculture. Local employment has surged in areas such as plant maintenance, security, repair services, and micro-supply chains. Rural enterprises—from electrical shops to transport services—are flourishing. Improved energy availability is boosting drinking water projects, handicrafts, dairy production, and cold-storage infrastructure. With enhanced nighttime safety and greater opportunities for women, PM-KUSUM is serving as a cornerstone for rural socio-economic upliftment.

“Crossing the 2000 MW mark reflects our commitment to creating a future where farmers have access to clean, reliable, and affordable energy,” said Dr. Bhanwarlal, attributing the success to transparent processes, innovation, and strong teamwork.

Rooftop Solar Momentum Rises in Rajasthan Under PM Surya Ghar Yojana

In a parallel advancement, Rajasthan is witnessing rapid growth in rooftop solar adoption under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s (MNRE) City Accelerator Program. Jaipur, Jodhpur, Ajmer, and Udaipur have been selected among 100 cities nationwide to strengthen rooftop solar capacity through awareness drives, vendor training, and public engagement activities.

During a review meeting chaired by DISCOMs Chairperson Aarti Dogra, officials from MNRE and the Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation discussed strategies to further accelerate rooftop penetration. Ms. Dogra noted that Rajasthan is adding over 10,000 rooftop installations every month, underscoring a rising public appetite for clean energy solutions. She emphasized the importance of granular awareness, particularly following the state’s approval of virtual net metering and group net metering, which now allows households without adequate rooftop space to adopt solar power.

The adoption push is further strengthened by an additional ₹17,000 subsidy offered by DISCOMs under the 150-unit free electricity scheme. According to the latest figures, Rajasthan has installed 1,09,000+ rooftop solar plants so far. Jaipur leads with 15,932 installations, followed by Jodhpur (6,436), Udaipur (5,794), and Ajmer (2,759).

The meeting also highlighted that banks are providing loans at a subsidised 5.75% interest rate, making rooftop solar more financially accessible. Ms. Dogra urged stakeholders to identify the reasons some applicants withdraw after registration and to take corrective measures to sustain the state’s rooftop solar momentum.

Rajasthan Hosted High-Level Session on BESS Integration on Expatriate Rajasthan Day

To further advance its renewable energy roadmap, the Rajasthan Energy Department organised a state-level session titled “Policy to Practice: The Evolving Role of BESS in RE Integration” on December 10, aligning with Expatriate Rajasthan Day celebrations.

Energy Minister Shri Hiralal Nagar stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Shri Bhajan Lal Sharma, the nation and the state have experienced unprecedented growth in renewable investments and production capacity. He highlighted the critical role of Battery Energy Storage Systems in ensuring grid stability, especially as renewable energy penetration continues to expand.

Rajasthan has already taken significant steps in this direction. The Rajasthan Energy Development Corporation has approved a 6,000 MWh standalone BESS tender, while the Rajasthan Solarpark Development Company Limited has prepared a plan to deploy 5,000 MWh of BESS alongside a 2,450 MW solar project at Pugal Solar Park in Bikaner. This large-scale integration is expected to enhance power availability during peak hours and strengthen the state’s grid resilience.

The session featured a distinguished panel, including Revenue Minister Hemant Meena, Food & Civil Supplies Minister Sumit Godara, CEA Chairman Ghanshyam Prasad, Power Grid CMD R. K. Tyagi, IREDA CMD  Pradeep Kumar Das, ISA Director General Ashish Khanna, Tata Power MD Praveer Sinha, and leaders from Brookfield, ReNew Power, and Serentica Renewables. The discussions centered on policy frameworks, technical readiness, and financing models to mainstream stored renewable energy.

DISCOMs Strengthen Social Security Measures Through Personal Accident Insurance Scheme

Beyond energy reforms, Rajasthan is also focusing on the welfare of its electricity personnel. In a compassionate gesture, Energy Minister Shri Hiralal Nagar presented ₹1.5 crore in insurance payouts to the dependents of six employees of Jaipur Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited (JVVNL) who passed away tragically. The event, held at Vidyut Bhawan, underscored the state’s commitment to supporting workers operating under high-risk conditions.

Under the Personal Accident Insurance Scheme, launched in partnership with the State Bank of India, families receive ₹1 crore in the event of accidental death, ₹80 lakh for partial disability, and additional benefits—all without any premium payment by the employees or the DISCOMs. Earlier, compensation was capped at ₹20 lakh, often inadequate for affected families. The new arrangement, formalised through an MoU signed in April 2025, provides much-needed financial security.

During the ceremony, beneficiaries included the families of late Technician Bachchu Singh Meena, late  Manoj Sharma, late Naveen, late Rakesh Suman, late Yudhishthir Kumar Saini, and late Dashrath Singh.

The event also marked the launch of a comprehensive pension package for retired personnel of JVVNL. This package ensures an insurance cover of up to ₹30 lakh for personal accidents and ₹10 lakh for medical and family welfare needs such as children’s education or marriage.

Rajasthan’s Energy Vision: A Holistic Pathway to Sustainable Growth

From pioneering solar capacity additions and accelerating rooftop adoption to building energy storage infrastructure and reinforcing worker welfare, Rajasthan is charting a holistic and inclusive energy future. These initiatives collectively demonstrate the state’s resolve to emerge as a national leader in renewable energy while ensuring that the benefits of clean power reach farmers, consumers, and frontline workers alike.
