Transportation is often described as the lifeblood of any region’s infrastructure—shaping its economic growth, social connectivity, and the everyday rhythm of people’s lives. More than a means of travel, a strong transport system underpins commerce, education, employment, and access to essential services.

In a geographically vast state like Rajasthan—India’s largest by area and home to more than 5 percent of the country’s population—the need for dependable and affordable public transport becomes even more critical. From students and working professionals to farmers, traders, and daily commuters, millions rely on the Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) to stay connected.

A New Chapter of Revival

Chief Minister Shri Bhajan Lal Sharma has placed the revival and modernization of RSRTC at the forefront of his governance agenda. Soon after assuming office, he initiated comprehensive reforms to revitalize an entity long burdened by financial losses, an ageing fleet, and falling ridership.

Under his leadership, stringent measures were introduced to strengthen transparency and operational efficiency. One of the major breakthroughs was effective control of diesel pilferage—an issue that had contributed significantly to the corporation’s losses. Simultaneously, improvements in route planning, bus deployment, and resource utilization led to a notable rise in both passenger footfall and average daily mileage.

These reforms have infused renewed confidence in the Roadways system, giving it a fresh and modern identity.

Turning the Deficit Around

Perhaps the most remarkable outcome of these efforts is the dramatic reduction in RSRTC’s operational deficit—from nearly ₹1,000 crore annually to around ₹300 crore. This achievement is being hailed as one of the most significant milestones in the corporation’s history, reflecting the Chief Minister’s strategic vision and reform-oriented governance.

A Modern Fleet for a Modern State

To improve travel safety, comfort, and reliability, the government inducted 810 new buses and added 352 buses on contract. This expansion has not only enhanced passenger experience but has also strengthened the corporation’s service network, contributing positively to revenue generation.

Building on this momentum, the state government has announced plans to introduce 800 more buses in the near future. This expansion aims to extend quality transport services to even the remotest regions, eliminate the remaining deficit, and eventually transform RSRTC into a financially robust and profitable organization. The broader vision is to position Rajasthan Roadways as a modern, technology-driven, and self-sustaining transport system that continues to support the state’s development.

A Model of Good Governance

The ongoing transformation of Rajasthan Roadways stands as a testament to effective governance, accountability, and citizen-centric policymaking. Under Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma’s leadership, the state’s public transport ecosystem is undergoing a powerful resurgence—one that promises stronger connectivity, improved services, and a brighter future for millions of passengers.

As Rajasthan moves ahead with new energy and direction, the reforms initiated today signal an even more progressive chapter in the years to come.
