In one of the year’s most extensive police reorganisations, the West Bengal government on Thursday transferred 40 police officers, including 21 IPS officers – 14 in SP rank and five in Additional SP/SDPO-level – along with 19 WBPS officers across major districts and commissionerates. The Home and Hill Affairs Department announced that all new postings take immediate effect.
The reshuffle follows a political storm triggered by Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, who recently wrote to the Chief Election Commissioner alleging that several IPS officers were operating in favour of the ruling Trinamool Congress.
Purba Medinipur SP Soumyadip Bhattacharya Moved After Adhikari’s Allegations
Among the most closely tracked changes is the transfer of Soumyadip Bhattacharya, SP of Purba Medinipur, who had been accused by Suvendu Adhikari of functioning under political influence. Bhattacharya has now been posted as SP, Bankura. The post of SP, Purba Medinipur has been left vacant, adding to political speculation.

Alongside senior IPS officers, the government also transferred seven IPS officers in Additional SP/SDPO ranks and 19 WBPS officers, including Additional SPs, SDPOs, Deputy SPs, Assistant Commandants, and Deputy Commandants. The realignment reshapes policing across multiple districts, commissionerates, and intelligence operations.
