Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, said the country’s semiconductor capabilities are on track to match leading global producers by 2032, signalling the government’s aggressive push to accelerate domestic manufacturing.

Speaking at a recent media forum in Singapore, Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said India aims to reach the same level as today’s major chipmaking nations within the 2031–2032 window, creating what he described as a “fair race and a level playing field.”

India’s semiconductor initiative remains in its early phase, but investments are gaining speed. A $10 billion government-backed incentive fund has catalysed a wave of assembly, testing and packaging proposals. Micron Technology is already setting up a facility in Gujarat, while Tata Group is among 10 companies preparing to fabricate silicon within the country.

Despite this momentum, India continues to lag behind established chip leaders such as Taiwan and South Korea, as well as major spenders including the US, China and Japan — all of which are investing heavily to build secure chip supply chains that power advancements in artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles and next-generation computing.

The minister said three semiconductor units in India are expected to begin commercial production early next year, marking a key milestone for the sector’s growth.

He said the combination of India’s state-backed semiconductor drive, its expanding design ecosystem and deep engineering talent is helping create an environment where private capital will begin flowing in more naturally. India hopes to draw major chipmakers in much the same way incentives have attracted Apple and its manufacturing partners to scale iPhone production in the country.
