The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has released a comprehensive policy on the adoption of Automated and Intelligent Machine-aided Construction (AI-MC) for National Highway projects. The initiative is in line with the government’s broader vision of a technologically advanced and resilient “Viksit Bharat”.
The policy sets the framework for integrating cutting-edge technologies such as automation, machine learning, and real-time monitoring tools in the planning and execution of highway construction projects. By doing so, the government aims to significantly enhance the speed, efficiency, and transparency of construction activities under the National Highways programme.
According to the policy document, AI-MC is expected to bring about several transformative benefits, including:
- Automated machine-guided construction that reduces human error
- Creation of a centralised digital repository of construction data
- Improved adherence to approved design specifications
- Enhanced time efficiency with a significant reduction in material wastage
- Timely completion of projects without compromising construction quality
- Better road rideability and user comfort
- Longer lifespan and improved durability of road infrastructure
- Real-time documentation and monitoring of progress
- Greater transparency in monitoring and controlling construction activities
Senior officials from the Ministry emphasised that this strategic shift to intelligent construction practices marks a new era in infrastructure development, where data-driven decision-making and automation will serve as key enablers. The AI-MC policy is expected to be implemented in collaboration with key infrastructure bodies such as the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) under the Ministry of Defence.
The government’s focus on digitised and intelligent construction methodologies is also expected to reduce lifecycle costs, improve safety standards, and align with global best practices in highway development.
By embracing the AI-MC framework, India joins a growing list of nations leveraging automation to address complex infrastructure challenges. The initiative not only supports the country’s immediate infrastructure goals but also contributes to long-term economic resilience and sustainability.
Stakeholders across the public and private sectors have welcomed the policy as a forward-looking step that will strengthen India’s infrastructure backbone and ensure faster delivery of quality highway projects.
