Vishnu Deo Sai

The Mahtari Vandan Yojana has emerged as a transformative initiative, bringing financial stability and empowerment to women across Chhattisgarh. The scheme, launched under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, provides direct monetary assistance to nearly 70 lakh women in the state, ensuring their economic independence and improving their quality of life.

Financial Assistance for Economic Independence

Every month, an amount of Rs. 1,000 is transferred directly into the bank accounts of eligible women beneficiaries. The first instalment was credited on March 10 last year, and since then, the government has consistently ensured that the amount reaches the women in the first week of every month. This initiative has provided not just financial aid but also a sense of security and independence to women, many of whom previously relied on others for their daily expenses.

The scheme has encouraged financial discipline among women, with more than five lakh women opening monthly savings accounts in post offices. Additionally, many recipients have begun saving or investing in their children’s education and household needs, showcasing the broader economic impact of the program. Women from various backgrounds, whether in rural areas, working in fields, or running small businesses, have found this scheme to be a vital support system.

Transforming Lives Across the State

For women like Smt. Meera Bai, whose husband is physically challenged, the scheme has been a lifeline. Managing household expenses by working as a labourer and raising three children, she utilises the Rs. 1,000 to ensure her children’s educational needs are met and household expenses are covered. “I have responsibilities towards my home, and this amount is a significant contribution. With it, I can fulfil the needs of my children and husband,” she shared.

Similarly, Smt. Savita Bai, whose husband works in the village fields, expressed her gratitude towards the initiative. “For us village women, Rs. 1,000 is generous. Traditionally, we used to save small amounts over time, but now, this financial aid provides us relief during difficult times. I no longer have to ask my husband for small amounts,” she said.

Smt. Budhwar Bai, a resident of a forested area, used her Mahtari Vandan Yojana funds to buy slippers for her grandson Ashish so he wouldn’t have to walk barefoot in the rain. She also purchased sweets for her grandchildren at the local Haat Bazar, highlighting how even a small amount can bring joy and dignity to families struggling with financial hardship. “It brings me immense happiness that I can fulfil some of their needs. This has only been possible because of the government’s initiative,” she said.

Boosting Rural Women Entrepreneurs

The scheme has also played a crucial role in supporting rural women entrepreneurs like Smt. Jyoti Yadav, a resident of Gram Panchayat Ajgarbahar in Korba district. Running a small roadside snack shop selling urad dal vadas, she faces daily struggles in managing business expenses, from buying dal and oil to grinding ingredients using traditional methods. On slow business days, her earnings barely reach Rs. 200 to 300, making it difficult to sustain her household.

However, the Rs. 1,000 she receives every month through the Mahtari Vandan Yojana has helped her manage essential expenses without worry. She takes pride in maintaining the quality of her food, ensuring that customers return. “Some people sell adulterated vadas, but I always use pure dal. This is why customers keep coming back,” she said. The scheme has provided her with stability and security, allowing her to navigate financial uncertainties with confidence.

A Program Bringing Hope and Happiness

Mahtari Vandan Yojana is more than just financial aid, it is a movement towards the empowerment of women in Chhattisgarh. By reducing economic dependence, enabling savings, and allowing women to invest in their families’ well-being, the scheme is fostering a more self-reliant society. Women across villages, towns, and cities eagerly await the first week of the month, knowing that this initiative brings not just financial relief but also dignity and independence.

As the scheme continues to reach millions of women, its impact is evident in the smiles of mothers, sisters, and daughters across the state, who now have the means to lead more secure and fulfilling lives.
