In a significant development, Radha Raturi (Retd IAS: 1988), who recently made history as Uttarakhand’s first woman Chief Secretary, has been appointed as the State’s Chief Information Commissioner. The appointment was made by the Governor of Uttarakhand on Saturday. She will hold this constitutional position for a tenure of three years or until the age of 65, whichever comes earlier.

Raturi officially retired from the post of Chief Secretary on March 31, 2025, passing the baton to her successor Anand Vardhan (IAS: 1992: UK). Her appointment as Chief Information Commissioner marks yet another milestone in a trailblazing administrative career that spanned several decades.

Before her appointment as Chief Secretary on January 31, 2024, Raturi served as Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister. She replaced Sukhbir Singh Sandhu (IAS: 1988: UD) and was granted two consecutive six-month extensions after her initial two-month tenure as Chief Secretary, culminating in her retirement at the end of March 2025.

The government’s decision to elevate her to the Chief Information Commissioner role follows considerable anticipation, as she had applied for the post well in advance. This move was confirmed recently with the issuance of an official appointment order.

Simultaneously, the Uttarakhand Information Commission has also appointed Dalip Kunwar, a recently retired IPS officer and former SSP of Dehradun, as an Information Commissioner. He joins Yogesh Bhatt in the Commission, with Radha Raturi now leading the body as the Chief Information Commissioner.

Radha Raturi, originally from Jabalpur, holds a background in journalism. She worked with Indian Express Mumbai and India Today before joining the Indian Information Service in 1985-86. She subsequently cleared the IPS in 1987 and entered the IAS in 1988. Over the years, she has served in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, establishing a legacy of leadership and excellence in public service.
