Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB)

The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) is set to establish a 125 megawatt (MW)/500 megawatt hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) at its Mylatti substation in Kasaragod, signalling the next step towards integrating renewable energy with grid stability. The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) will serve as the BESS implementation agency for the project.

The initiative comes in response to the increasing need for energy storage solutions as renewable energy capacity expands in the state. In November 2024, Kerala secured ₹135 crore in Central viability gap funding for a 500 MWh BESS project, reinforcing its commitment to energy security and sustainability.

BESS capacity is defined by MW (power capacity), which represents the maximum power output at any given time, and MWh (energy capacity), indicating the total energy it can store or discharge over time. SECI, a ‘Navratna’ PSU and a key renewable energy implementing agency, will oversee developer selection and enter into a Battery Energy Storage Purchase Agreement (BESPA) with the winning bidder to provide storage services to KSEB.

Apart from BESS, pumped hydro storage projects (PSP) are also being explored by KSEB to manage excess daytime renewable energy and utilise it during peak demand hours. The power utility formally issued orders on January 28 to proceed with the Mylatti BESS project in collaboration with SECI.

The Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has emphasised in its Optimal Generation Mix 2030 report that large-scale energy storage is essential to stabilizing the grid and ensuring the reliability of renewable power generation across different time frames.
