In preparation for the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 in Prayagraj, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), in collaboration with leading telecom service providers, has undertaken extensive measures to ensure seamless communication for millions of devotees and visitors. This initiative is part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations, reflecting India’s commitment to leveraging technology for large-scale public events.
Upgraded Telecom Infrastructure Across Prayagraj
To accommodate the expected massive influx of pilgrims, significant upgrades to the telecom infrastructure have been made across Prayagraj city and the Mela area. Over 900 new Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) have been deployed, and 1,550 existing BTS units upgraded to enhance network capacity and reliability. Furthermore, 78 transportable towers (Cell-on-Wheels) and 150 outdoor small-cell solutions have been installed, complemented by the laying of over 300 kilometres of optical fibre cable (OFC).
These upgrades are designed to ensure robust network connectivity not only in the city but also in crowded public spaces, including transport hubs, highways, and holding areas. A dedicated focus has been placed on the Green Corridor to maintain consistent network service in high-traffic zones.

Citizen-Centric Telecom Services
The DoT has prioritized citizen-centric services to enhance public convenience and safety during the event. A total of 53 help desks have been set up across the Mela area to assist visitors in addressing telecom-related concerns, including blocking lost or stolen mobile devices and reporting suspected fraudulent communications. Electromagnetic radiation testing has also been conducted to ensure telecom towers operate within permissible safety limits.

Additionally, a Cell Broadcast Alert facility integrated with the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) has been established to disseminate emergency alerts, disaster warnings, and public awareness messages. These measures aim to ensure a secure and informed environment for all attendees.

Disaster Management Centers
To address potential emergencies, three disaster management centres have been established within the Mela area. These centres, operated collaboratively by Airtel, BSNL, Jio, and Vi, are equipped with advanced communication technologies to provide prompt responses during crises, whether natural or man-made. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding the well-being of visitors during the event.
Enhancing the Digital Experience
The telecom enhancements extend beyond basic connectivity, aiming to enrich the digital experience of attendees. Features like mobile-based payments and live streaming of religious rituals are expected to play a key role in elevating the convenience and spiritual engagement of participants.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, held every 12 years, is one of the largest religious gatherings globally, drawing millions of pilgrims to Prayagraj for spiritual renewal and cultural exchange.
