The Central Government has approved a further one-year extension for Satish Kumar as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Railway Board, allowing him to continue in the top leadership position until August 31, 2027.

One-Year Extension Approved

According to the ACC’s decision, Satish Kumar, a retired Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS) officer of the 1986 batch, will continue as Chairman and CEO of the Railway Board for another year with effect from September 1, 2026.

The extension has been granted by relaxing the provisions of the Indian Railway (Selection to Senior Posts) Rules, 2025.

With this approval, his tenure has now been extended until August 31, 2027.

Second Consecutive Extension

This is the second extension granted to Satish Kumar after his retirement.

Earlier, the government had approved a one-year contractual extension that came into effect on September 1, 2025. He has been serving as Chairman and CEO of the Railway Board since September 1, 2024.

The latest decision allows him to continue leading the organisation for another year, ensuring continuity in the implementation of ongoing projects and policy initiatives.

Experienced Railway Administrator

Satish Kumar has spent decades serving in the Indian Railways and has held several important operational and administrative assignments during his career.

His extensive experience across various aspects of railway management has contributed to his leadership role at the Railway Board, where he oversees policy formulation, infrastructure development, operational efficiency and organisational reforms.

As Chairman and CEO, he heads one of the world’s largest railway networks and is responsible for guiding its strategic direction.

Leadership Continuity for Indian Railways

The extension comes at a time when Indian Railways is undertaking major initiatives to modernise infrastructure, improve passenger services, expand freight capacity and accelerate technology adoption.

Officials believe that continuity in senior leadership supports the timely execution of long-term projects and facilitates better coordination across various departments of the national transporter.

Continuing at the Helm

With the latest approval, Satish Kumar will remain Chairman and CEO of the Railway Board until August 31, 2027, making him one of the longest-serving recent heads of the organisation.
