NTPC Board Approves ₹12,000 Crore Fundraising Through NCDs

State-owned power major NTPC Limited has approved a proposal to raise up to ₹12,000 crore through the issuance of Non-Convertible Debentures (NCDs). The decision was taken by the company’s Board of Directors at its meeting held on July 24, 2026, as part of its strategy to support future business and capital requirements.

The funds will be raised through private placement in the domestic market in one or more tranches.

Fundraising Through Domestic NCDs

According to the company’s regulatory filing, NTPC will issue the NCDs through private placement, with the timing and structure of each tranche to be decided based on market conditions and funding requirements.

The fundraising programme will remain valid from the date of passing the special resolution until the completion of one year or the date of the company’s next Annual General Meeting in the financial year 2027-28, whichever is earlier.

The company said details such as the size of each tranche, tenure, interest rate, security, and listing on BSE and/or NSE will be finalised at the time of each issue.

NTPC Expands Generation Capacity

Along with the fundraising decision, NTPC also shared its operational performance for the April-June quarter of the current financial year.

The company’s total installed capacity, including group companies, increased to 90,904 MW as of June 30, 2026, compared to 82,646 MW during the same period last year. During the first quarter of FY 2026-27, the NTPC Group added 1,796 MW of new generation capacity.

Power Generation Sees Growth

NTPC reported an increase in commercial power generation during the quarter. The company generated 93.63 billion units (BU) of electricity, up from 91.06 BU in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

Its coal-based power plants recorded a Plant Load Factor (PLF) of 76.71%, compared to 75.16% in the year-ago period. The performance remained higher than the national average PLF of 70.32% for coal-based power plants during the quarter.

The average tariff remained largely stable at ₹4.86 per unit, compared with ₹4.87 per unit in the corresponding quarter last year.

Supporting Future Growth

The approval to raise ₹12,000 crore through NCDs is expected to strengthen NTPC’s financial flexibility as it continues to expand its power generation portfolio and invest in new energy projects. With increasing installed capacity and steady operational performance, the company remains focused on meeting the country’s growing electricity demand while supporting India’s long-term energy transition.
