Atul Kumar Thakur, Pankaj Kumar Singh Appointed as Joint Directors in CBI

The Central Government has appointed Atul Kumar Thakur and Pankaj Kumar Singh, both 2008-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officers of the AGMUT cadre, as Joint Directors in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).


The appointments have been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) and notified through an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). Both officers are currently serving as Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) in the CBI.

ACC Approves Key Appointments

According to the DoPT order, Atul Kumar Thakur has been appointed as Joint Director, CBI, with effect from the date he assumes charge of the post. His tenure will continue for an overall period of seven years, up to November 24, 2028, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

Similarly, Pankaj Kumar Singh has also been elevated as Joint Director in the agency. His appointment will be effective from the date of assumption of charge and will remain valid for an overall tenure of seven years, up to December 5, 2028, or until further orders.


Both Officers Currently Serving in CBI

Before their elevation, both officers were serving as Deputy Inspectors General in the Central Bureau of Investigation. During their tenure in the agency, they have been associated with the investigation and supervision of important cases while contributing to the organisation’s operational responsibilities.

Their promotion to the post of Joint Director reflects the Centre’s decision to strengthen the senior leadership of India’s premier investigative agency.

Strengthening Leadership at CBI

The appointment of the two senior IPS officers comes as the CBI continues to handle a wide range of investigations involving corruption, economic offences and other high-profile cases. As Joint Directors, Atul Kumar Thakur and Pankaj Kumar Singh will be responsible for supervising key investigative divisions, providing strategic leadership and supporting the agency’s efforts to ensure effective and timely investigations.
