Mumbai: Maharashtra is set to witness one of the largest investments in digital infrastructure in the country, with global data centre operator AirTrunk announcing plans to invest approximately ₹2 lakh crore in the state. The proposed investment will be anchored by a large-scale data centre project in Pen, Raigad district, further strengthening Maharashtra’s position as a leading technology and digital infrastructure hub.

The announcement came during a meeting between Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and AirTrunk Chief Executive Officer Robin Khuda, where the company shared details of its expansion plans and long-term investment strategy in the state.

Mega Data Centre Project Planned in Raigad

According to officials, AirTrunk’s proposed facility in Raigad is expected to become one of the largest data centre developments in the region. The project is being planned to cater to the rapidly growing demand for cloud services, artificial intelligence applications, digital storage, and high-performance computing infrastructure.

The company indicated that the scale of the project could be significantly larger than initially envisioned, reflecting the increasing requirements of businesses and digital platforms for advanced data processing and storage capabilities.

Boost to Maharashtra’s Digital Infrastructure

The investment is expected to play a crucial role in expanding Maharashtra’s digital infrastructure ecosystem. With growing adoption of AI technologies, cloud computing, fintech services, and digital platforms, demand for data centre capacity has surged across India.

Officials noted that the proposed facility would support the state’s ambitions to emerge as a preferred destination for technology investments while creating a strong foundation for future digital growth.

The project is also expected to generate employment opportunities during both the construction and operational phases, while attracting ancillary investments in technology, telecommunications, and infrastructure sectors.

Supporting India’s Growing Digital Economy

Industry experts view data centres as essential infrastructure powering the modern digital economy. As businesses increasingly rely on data-driven technologies, large-scale facilities such as the one proposed by AirTrunk are becoming critical for ensuring secure, reliable, and scalable digital services.

The investment aligns with India’s broader push toward digital transformation, supporting sectors such as artificial intelligence, e-commerce, financial technology, healthcare, education, and smart governance.

Strengthening India–Australia Technology Collaboration

The proposed investment also highlights growing economic cooperation between India and Australia, particularly in technology and innovation-led sectors. AirTrunk’s expansion plans reflect increasing international confidence in India’s digital infrastructure market and its long-term growth potential.

Officials believe the project will further strengthen Maharashtra’s reputation as a key destination for global technology investments while contributing to the development of a robust and future-ready digital ecosystem.
