Hydrogen Innovation and Collaborative Research Key to India’s Clean Energy Future, Says DST Official

Kochi: The Global Hydrogen & Renewable Energy Summit 2025, held on March 12–13, 2025 in Kochi, Kerala, brought together policymakers, scientists, industry leaders, innovators, and energy experts to discuss pathways for accelerating the clean energy transition. During the summit, Dr. Anita Gupta, Head – CEST, Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, highlighted the critical role of hydrogen technologies, research-driven innovation, and collaborative ecosystems in helping India achieve its long-term energy and climate goals.

Addressing delegates at the summit, Dr. Gupta noted that the global challenge of climate change has accelerated the need for cleaner and more sustainable energy systems. She emphasised that India’s ambitions around energy security, decarbonisation, and net-zero commitments require a strong focus on innovation, emerging technologies, and cross-sector collaboration.

Hydrogen Emerging as a Key Energy Transition Enabler

Speaking on the evolution of energy systems, Dr. Gupta highlighted the gradual transition from conventional fuels to cleaner alternatives and underscored the growing importance of hydrogen in the future energy landscape.

She noted that transforming energy systems is a long-term process that requires supportive policies, robust infrastructure, and sustained investment in research and development. Governments, she said, play a vital role in creating enabling ecosystems that support technological advancement and accelerate adoption of clean energy solutions.

India’s ongoing efforts to decarbonise sectors such as power, transportation, fertilisers, and industrial processes are expected to create significant opportunities for hydrogen-based technologies and renewable energy integration.

Research and Innovation at the Core

Dr. Gupta emphasised the importance of research and development in driving technological breakthroughs and enabling large-scale deployment of clean energy solutions. She highlighted the role of the Department of Science and Technology in supporting innovation through national programmes, strategic partnerships, and international collaborations.

She also referred to global initiatives such as Mission Innovation, which encourage countries to work together on advancing clean energy technologies and accelerating climate action.

According to her, stronger engagement between government agencies, academic institutions, startups, and industry stakeholders is essential for translating research outcomes into practical solutions that can address real-world energy challenges.

Hydrogen Valley Initiatives Gain Momentum

Highlighting India’s growing focus on hydrogen ecosystems, Dr. Gupta discussed efforts to establish Hydrogen Valley Innovation Clusters aimed at creating integrated hubs for hydrogen production, storage, transportation, and utilisation.

She noted that several hydrogen valley projects have already been identified across the country, including initiatives in Kerala, which is increasingly emerging as a hub for renewable energy and clean technology innovation.

These projects are expected to facilitate collaboration among research institutions, industries, and policymakers while creating opportunities for technology demonstration and commercialisation.

Strengthening Public-Private Collaboration

The summit also explored the role of private sector participation in advancing clean energy innovation. Dr. Gupta stressed the importance of fostering industry-led research and creating mechanisms that encourage greater investment in emerging technologies.

She highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen India’s research and innovation ecosystem through dedicated funding programmes and institutional support aimed at accelerating technological development and commercial adoption.

Driving the Transition Towards Energy Independence

Participants at the summit discussed strategies for scaling hydrogen technologies, strengthening renewable energy infrastructure, and creating sustainable pathways towards energy independence and net-zero emissions.

The event provided a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration among government officials, scientists, startups, investors, and industry leaders committed to advancing the clean energy transition.

As India continues to pursue ambitious climate and energy goals, experts at the summit emphasised that innovation, strategic partnerships, and sustained investments will be key to building a resilient and sustainable energy future.
