In a major push towards sustainable mobility, the Bihar government is set to introduce 400 electric AC buses under the Bihar State Road Transport Corporation (BSRTC). The initiative aims to modernise public transport while reducing pollution and fuel dependency across the state.
Patna to Get the Largest Share
Out of the total fleet, 150 buses will be deployed in Patna, making it the biggest beneficiary of the rollout.
- 75 buses will operate within the city
- 75 buses will run on intercity routes such as Patna–Rajgir and Patna–Bihar Sharif
Each bus will have a capacity of around 60 passengers, helping ease congestion and improve travel comfort, especially during peak hours.
Charging Infrastructure Gains Pace
To support the electric fleet, the state is rapidly building charging infrastructure across key cities:
- Charging station completed in Purnia
- 60% work completed in Gaya
- 50% progress in Patna and Muzaffarpur
- Construction underway in Bhagalpur and Darbhanga
Charging an electric bus is expected to take about 1 to 1.5 hours, ensuring quick turnaround for operations.
Depots in Patna to Be Upgraded
BSRTC is also upgrading major depots, including Phulwarisharif Depot and ISBT Bairia, to handle the new fleet.
- 8 charging points planned for every 50 buses
- Improved infrastructure to ensure smooth and uninterrupted services
Positive Environmental Impact
Bihar’s transition to electric mobility has already shown encouraging results. Since 2021:
- Around 2.5 million litres of diesel saved
- Nearly 7,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions reduced
With the addition of 400 new buses, the environmental benefits are expected to increase significantly.
Towards Cleaner Urban Mobility
The initiative reflects Bihar’s growing focus on clean energy and sustainable transport solutions. By introducing electric buses, the state aims to improve air quality, enhance passenger experience, and build a future-ready public transport system.
