The Uttar Pradesh AI & Health Innovation Conference 2026, held on 12–13 January 2026 in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, brought together policymakers, healthcare administrators, technology experts, startups, and industry stakeholders to discuss the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in strengthening healthcare systems. During the inaugural session, Ujjwal Kumar, Managing Director, UPMSCL, shared insights on how AI can support healthcare delivery and address large-scale public health challenges.

Addressing the gathering, Kumar highlighted that AI has the potential to go beyond technological advancement by enabling healthcare professionals to improve efficiency and decision-making. He noted that AI can help address one of healthcare’s longstanding challenges — balancing quality, accessibility, and affordability — by creating systems capable of delivering improved outcomes at scale.

Referring to healthcare challenges commonly faced in large populations, he pointed to issues such as high patient volumes, shortages of specialists, diagnostic gaps, and the increasing need for real-time population health intelligence. According to him, AI-driven tools are increasingly being developed to address these challenges and support healthcare systems worldwide.

He highlighted examples of AI-enabled applications across disease screening and healthcare management, noting their growing role in areas such as tuberculosis, cancer, non-communicable diseases, and eye care. Such technologies, he said, have the potential to support frontline healthcare workers through clinical decision systems while assisting hospitals in improving disease surveillance and operational efficiency.

Beyond diagnostics and clinical applications, Kumar stressed that AI can also strengthen hospital administration and healthcare operations. Technologies capable of improving workflow efficiency, reducing diagnostic turnaround time, and optimising supply chain systems can contribute significantly to healthcare transformation.

He further emphasised that successful AI implementation should not focus solely on adopting emerging technologies but rather on identifying practical use cases that strengthen frontline service delivery and improve healthcare equity. Responsible deployment, supported by safety, ethics, and public accountability, remains equally important.

Highlighting the importance of learning from international experiences, Kumar noted that global best practices in AI adoption should be evaluated within local contexts to understand what can effectively work at scale within India’s healthcare ecosystem.
