In a major step towards building a tech-driven governance model, the Maharashtra government has approved the creation of a dedicated Department of Electronics, Information Technology and Artificial Intelligence, along with an annual outlay of ₹133.35 crore.
The decision, taken at a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, reflects the state’s intent to place technology at the core of administration and public service delivery.
At the heart of this move is the creation of a structured IT cadre within the government. A total of 427 posts will be established across Mantralaya, various departments, and district offices. This marks a shift from the earlier system, where IT-related responsibilities were scattered and handled without a dedicated framework.
To further strengthen the ecosystem, the existing Directorate of Information Technology will be upgraded into a full-fledged Commissionerate for Electronics, IT and AI. With 77 sanctioned posts, this body will act as the central authority for planning, coordination, and execution of technology initiatives across the state.
Recognising the need for specialised expertise, the government will also bring in external professionals. Around 389 technical roles will be filled through an external mechanism, supported by the creation of a Maharashtra e-Mission Team (MeMT). This team will focus on project management, monitoring, and ensuring smooth implementation of digital initiatives.
The initiative also looks ahead by investing in future talent. An internship programme for 200 engineering graduates will be launched, aimed at building a skilled workforce aligned with emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.
Officials believe the new department will play a key role in expanding digital services, improving efficiency, and enabling data-driven governance. It is also expected to strengthen cybersecurity and accelerate the adoption of new technologies across sectors.
Beyond administrative reforms, the move signals a broader vision—integrating technology with sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, renewable energy, and manufacturing. The goal is to make governance more transparent, responsive, and citizen-centric.

With this structural overhaul, Maharashtra is positioning itself to fully embrace digital transformation, using artificial intelligence not just as a tool, but as a foundation for smarter governance and better public services.
