In a landmark step for India’s technology landscape, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has inaugurated the country’s first indigenous quantum computing testbeds in Amaravati, positioning the region as an emerging hub for advanced research and innovation.

The launch, held on World Quantum Day, marks a significant move towards building India’s capabilities in quantum technology—an area seen as the future of computing.

The newly established Amaravati Quantum Reference Facilities include two systems: Amaravati 1S at SRM University, Amaravati, and Amaravati 1Q at Medha Towers in Gannavaram near Vijayawada. Developed by Indian startups Qbit Force and Qubitech, these systems are built with over 80% indigenous components, reflecting a strong push towards self-reliance in high-end technology.

What makes these facilities unique is their ability to test and validate quantum hardware under extreme conditions, including temperatures close to minus 273°C. This allows researchers to experiment with critical components such as cables, amplifiers, and control systems that are essential for quantum computing.

The initiative is designed as an open-access platform, enabling students, researchers, startups, and enterprises to directly engage with quantum systems. This hands-on access is expected to accelerate innovation and bridge the gap between theoretical research and real-world applications.

Officials highlighted that the project is a step towards building a sovereign quantum hardware ecosystem in India. Leading institutions such as the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, the Indian Institute of Science, and the Defence Research and Development Organisation have provided technical support, further strengthening the initiative.

The testbeds are part of the larger Amaravati Quantum Valley programme under India’s National Quantum Mission. The initiative has already attracted over 80 industry and academic partners and is set to host an IBM 133-qubit quantum computer in the future.

Speaking on the occasion, CM Naidu emphasised that the focus is not just on software, but on developing strong hardware capabilities—an area where India aims to reduce dependence on global technologies.

With this launch, Amaravati is taking a bold step into the future, positioning itself at the forefront of quantum innovation and reinforcing India’s ambitions to become a global leader in next-generation technologies.
