Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Samrat Choudhary was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Bihar on Wednesday, marking a significant political transition in the state and bringing an end to Nitish Kumar’s long-standing leadership.
The swearing-in ceremony, held in Patna, was attended by senior leaders of the National Democratic Alliance, party functionaries and other dignitaries. Choudhary’s elevation is seen as a milestone for the BJP, as he becomes the first leader from the party to assume the Chief Minister’s office in Bihar.
The leadership change follows the resignation of JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar, who had been at the centre of Bihar’s politics for nearly two decades. His tenure was marked by multiple political realignments and coalition shifts, making him one of the most influential figures in the state’s governance landscape.
Choudhary, who previously served as Deputy Chief Minister, was elected as the leader of the BJP legislature party, paving the way for his appointment. His rise is also being viewed through the lens of Bihar’s complex social and political dynamics, particularly in terms of caste representation and regional influence.
The transition signals a new phase in Bihar’s governance, with the BJP now taking direct charge of the state administration. Political observers note that this shift could have implications for both governance priorities and electoral strategies in the run-up to future elections.
A new cabinet is expected to be formed soon, with discussions underway among alliance partners regarding portfolio allocation. The incoming government is likely to focus on continuity in key sectors while also setting its own policy direction.
Choudhary’s appointment marks not just a change in leadership, but a broader reconfiguration of Bihar’s political landscape, as the state enters a new chapter under BJP-led governance.
