India’s rapidly growing urban centres are increasingly grappling with rising pollution levels and mobility challenges. Even in the most prominent areas of cities like Delhi, air quality concerns continue to pose serious risks to public health. Recognising these challenges early, the Government of Telangana has taken proactive steps to promote sustainable mobility and reduce environmental impact.

One of the key initiatives has been the introduction of a progressive Electric Vehicle (EV) policy. The state has extended tax and registration exemptions for EVs until 2026, prioritising long-term environmental benefits over immediate revenue. Despite incurring an estimated financial impact of nearly ₹1,000 crore, Telangana has successfully accelerated EV adoption, with over 1.55 lakh electric vehicles already on the roads. This has positioned the state among the fastest-growing EV markets in the country.

Hyderabad, as one of India’s fastest-evolving metropolitan cities, is at the centre of this transformation. The government is actively working towards making key urban zones fully electric. Plans are underway to introduce 2,500 electric buses under major mobility initiatives, with a long-term goal of transitioning the city’s public transport system entirely to electric mobility.

In addition, the state is supporting the transition of auto-rickshaws by encouraging retrofitting and cleaner fuel alternatives such as CNG and LPG. Financial assistance is being extended to drivers to ensure that this shift is inclusive and not burdensome. Rather than enforcing change, the government is focusing on enabling participation and building awareness around environmental responsibility.

Beyond electrification, Telangana is also prioritising road safety, smart mobility solutions, and the adoption of emerging technologies. With urbanisation accelerating, there is a strong emphasis on building integrated and future-ready transport systems. Initiatives such as metro expansion, improved connectivity, and technology-driven reforms are helping the state respond to the evolving needs of its growing population.

Mobility, today, is no longer just a convenience—it is a fundamental requirement for economic growth and urban development. Telangana’s approach reflects this understanding, as it continues to implement reforms aimed at reducing manual intervention, enhancing efficiency, and improving user experience across the transport ecosystem.

The government is also fostering collaboration among key stakeholders, including policymakers, transport authorities, and industry experts. By encouraging dialogue and knowledge-sharing, Telangana aims to develop scalable and replicable models that can serve as benchmarks for the rest of the country.

Looking ahead, the state is aligning its efforts with the broader vision of India@2047. By expanding public transport, embracing clean technologies, and strengthening infrastructure, Telangana aspires to emerge as a national role model in sustainable mobility.

As cities continue to evolve, the need for efficient, inclusive, and environmentally responsible transport systems will only grow. Telangana’s forward-looking initiatives demonstrate how policy, technology, and collaboration can come together to shape the future of urban mobility in India.
