Kanpur Metro recorded a significant milestone on New Year’s Day, crossing the one crore passenger mark since commencement of commercial operations, officials said on Monday.

The achievement highlights growing public preference for the city’s rapid transit system, which was launched to provide a fast, reliable and comfortable mode of urban transportation in one of Uttar Pradesh’s largest cities. The milestone was reached as commuters across age groups embraced the metro for daily travel, weekend outings and festive journeys.
Authorities said the metro’s appeal has been driven by its punctuality, safety features and convenience, especially for residents seeking to avoid road congestion during peak hours. Since its launch, the service has steadily increased its ridership, with numbers rising sharply during weekends and holidays.
An official from the metro project said, “Crossing the one crore passenger mark on January 1 reflects the trust that people of Kanpur have placed in the metro service. It motivates us to continue improving services and expanding connectivity.”

The Kanpur Metro network, which connects key residential and commercial hubs, is part of broader efforts to modernise urban transport in Uttar Pradesh. Commuters have welcomed the cleaner and more efficient travel option, particularly as the city continues to grow.
With future expansion phases planned, the metro is expected to cover more areas and further ease travel for thousands of daily commuters. Officials said they will continue to monitor passenger trends and enhance services based on commuter needs and feedback.
