Neyveli Uttar Pradesh Power Limited (NUPPL), a joint venture of NLC India Limited (51%) and Uttar Pradesh Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Limited (49%), has announced the Commercial Operation Declaration (COD) of Unit-2 (660 MW) of the 1,980 MW Ghatampur Thermal Power Project, effective 00:00 hours on December 09, 2025.

Unit-2 achieved synchronisation with the 765 kV grid on July 20, 2025, in a single attempt soon after the successful completion of the steam blowing milestone. The unit then progressed swiftly through commissioning stages, completing its 72-hour full-load trial run in the very first attempt, and achieving operational readiness within just 19 days of first coal firing—a benchmark achievement in India’s thermal power sector.

With this milestone, Unit-1 and Unit-2, totalling 1,320 MW, are now commercially operational, significantly boosting reliable power supply to Uttar Pradesh and Assam.

Union Minister for Coal, Shri Kishan Reddy, lauded the achievement on X, calling it a symbol of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and emphasising the project’s strategic importance for national energy security, regional development, and infrastructure growth.

Speaking at Ghatampur, Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, CMD of NLC India Ltd and Chairman, NUPPL, said, “The declaration of COD for Unit-2 reflects the focused and dedicated efforts of Team NUPPL, NLCIL, UPRVUNL and all contracting partners. This milestone further strengthens our commitment to nation-building through reliable energy supply.” Senior officials including  M. Venkatachalam, Director (Power), Durai Kumar S, CEO–NUPPL, and Ashok Kumar Mali, CFO–NUPPL, were also present.

Unit-1, commissioned on December 12, 2024, was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 30, 2025, and has since generated 4,449.84 MUs, earning ₹2,638.69 crore in revenue. With Unit-2 online, the project is on track to commission its third and final unit in FY 2025–26, completing the full 1,980 MW capacity.

Once all three units are operational, the project is expected to generate 14,743.08 MUs annually, sufficient to meet the energy needs of around 12 million Indian households, contributing an estimated ₹8,453.3 crore in annual revenue. Presently, 93.11% of the power is allocated to Uttar Pradesh, with the remainder distributed across other states to promote energy equity.

The Ghatampur project incorporates advanced environmental safeguards, including supercritical technology, Flue Gas Desulphurization (FGD), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems, and Zero Liquid Discharge, ensuring compliance with stringent environmental norms. On the socio-economic front, the project has generated substantial employment, engaging up to 8,500 workers during peak construction and currently providing work to over 4,000 contract workers. Upon full commissioning, direct and indirect employment is projected to reach around 25,000, supporting regional economic growth.

NUPPL is also progressing with the Pachwara South Opencast Project (PSOCP) in Jharkhand, which will serve as a sustainable coal source for the plant. Coal production from PSOCP is expected to commence in phases during FY 2025–26.

With Unit-2 entering commercial operation, NUPPL advances one step closer to delivering sustainable, efficient thermal power and strengthening the nation’s energy landscape.
