The government-led India AI Mission has brought eight additional organisations on board to develop foundational large language models (LLMS), further strengthening efforts towards indigenous AI capabilities. The newly selected entities are Tech Mahindra, Fractal Analytics, Avatar AI, Zeinteiq Aitech Innovations, Genloop Intelligence, NeuroDX (Intellihealth), Shodh AI and a consortium led by IIT Bombay, the latter aiming to build a large-scale, trillion-parameter model.
This is the second major round of selections under the IndiaAI Mission; the first round had previously shortlisted three startups for AI model development. By expanding the network of participating players, the mission aims to accelerate the creation of AI systems rooted in India’s linguistic diversity, sector-specific requirements, and data governance standards.
Government officials highlighted that the LLM programme is being paired with a significant expansion of computational capacity in the country. The IndiaAI Mission is establishing high-performance infrastructure with tens of thousands of GPUs to ensure that selected organisations and research bodies have the scale needed to train and deploy advanced generative AI models.
With this new lineup, India is positioning itself to minimise dependence on foreign proprietary AI models while fostering innovation across language technologies, digital public infrastructure, and industry-driven AI applications. The initiative underscores India’s broader strategy of building a resilient and self-reliant AI ecosystem to support economic growth, digital transformation, and technological leadership.
