In a landmark announcement, Google unveiled plans to invest $15 billion over five years to establish a state-of-the-art Artificial Intelligence (AI) data centre in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, marking its largest investment in India to date. The tech giant will collaborate with Adani Group and Airtel to build the project’s digital infrastructure, which will also include a new international subsea gateway on India’s eastern coast.

The ambitious initiative comes at a time of evolving India–U.S. trade dynamics and aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for a self-reliant, “Viksit Bharat”. The Visakhapatnam facility will be part of Google’s global network of AI hubs spanning 12 countries and is described as Google’s largest AI investment outside the United States, according to Thomas Kurien, CEO of Google Cloud.

In a post on X, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet Inc., said he had discussed the project with PM Modi, calling it a “landmark development.” Pichai wrote, “This hub combines gigawatt-scale compute capacity, a new international subsea gateway, and large-scale energy infrastructure — accelerating AI innovation and driving growth across the country.”

Responding to the announcement, Prime Minister Modi stated that the investment “aligns with our vision to build a Viksit Bharat” and would democratise access to technology, ensuring ‘AI for All’ while strengthening India’s position as a global technology leader.

According to a Google blog post, the project will generate substantial economic opportunities for both India and the United States. A study by Access Partnership, commissioned by Google, estimates that the AI hub could add $15 billion to U.S. GDP between 2026 and 2030 through increased cloud and AI adoption and cross-border collaboration.

IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw thanked Google for its “transformative” investment, emphasising that the facility will support the goals of the India AI Mission. He highlighted the government’s focus on reskilling and upskilling IT professionals, noting that AI services represent “a new category in India’s digital economy.”

Developed in partnership with AdaniConneX — a joint venture between Adani Enterprises and EdgeConneX — and Airtel, the AI hub will use the same advanced infrastructure that powers Google’s core products such as Search, Workspace, and YouTube.

The new subsea gateway will bring multiple international cables to Visakhapatnam, complementing existing landing points in Mumbai and Chennai, and strengthening India’s digital connectivity and data resilience. Google will also collaborate with local partners to develop clean energy generation, transmission lines, and storage systems in Andhra Pradesh.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu hailed the investment as a defining moment for the state, announcing that the project will generate nearly 1.88 lakh direct and indirect jobs. “We are proud to host India’s first gigawatt-scale data centre and Google’s first AI hub in the country,” Naidu said, calling it a “new era for India’s AI future.”

IT and HRD Minister N. Lokesh Naidu added that the initiative would accelerate the state’s digital economy, attract global investors, and foster a thriving startup ecosystem, positioning Andhra Pradesh as a model for responsible and inclusive AI development.

Recent major investments in the state from ArcelorMittal, Bharat Forge, and BPCL further underscore Andhra Pradesh’s growing reputation as a preferred destination for technology and energy infrastructure projects.
