In a significant move aimed at strengthening leadership in the country’s energy sector, the Government of India has appointed Ravi Dhawan (IAS: 2011 batch, AGMUT cadre) as Director in the Ministry of Power for a tenure of five years. A seasoned administrator with a strong track record in governance, Dhawan has been serving as Special Secretary (Power) in the Delhi administration while also holding the additional charge of Member, Delhi Jal Board. His career reflects a deep engagement with infrastructure planning, public utilities, and environmental governance, making him well-suited for a crucial role in shaping the nation’s energy policy.
Throughout his service, Dhawan has managed a diverse portfolio of assignments, including oversight of G-20 summit preparations, formulation of Annual Plan matters, and handling key responsibilities linked to the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) and the National Green Tribunal (NGT). His administrative acumen and hands-on approach in managing projects at the intersection of infrastructure, environment, and urban governance have earned him a reputation as a results-oriented officer.
The Ministry of Power is currently navigating a critical phase, balancing India’s rising electricity demand with the government’s ambitious renewable energy goals and commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. Dhawan’s appointment comes at a time when the sector is undergoing transformative changes, with an increased focus on modernising transmission networks, reducing distribution losses, and integrating renewable energy sources into the national grid. His experience in managing power-related initiatives at the state level is expected to aid in the implementation of large-scale reforms and strategic projects at the national level.
With India’s energy landscape rapidly evolving, Dhawan’s role will be pivotal in aligning policy frameworks with the country’s broader economic and environmental objectives. His five-year tenure provides a stable leadership window for advancing initiatives that enhance the reliability, affordability, and sustainability of India’s power supply—an area critical to supporting industrial growth, improving quality of life, and meeting climate commitments. The appointment signals the government’s emphasis on placing capable, reform-minded officers in positions that directly influence the country’s development trajectory in the energy domain.
