The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth ₹2,000 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the supply of state-of-the-art air defence fire control radars to the Indian Army. The agreement, finalised on 25 July in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, is a significant step under the ‘Buy (Indian–Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)’ category of defence acquisition.
Designed and developed by BEL, the radar system boasts over 70 per cent indigenous content and is equipped to detect and track a range of aerial threats, including fighter jets, helicopters, and drones. These radars will be deployed with the Indian Army’s air defence regiments to enhance surveillance and targeting precision, especially in low-level airspace scenarios.
Officials said the system is tailored to support battlefield operations under varied environmental conditions and is set to strengthen the air defence infrastructure of forward-deployed units.

The Ministry highlighted that this procurement aligns with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, promoting self-reliance in defence manufacturing. The project will also involve the participation of Indian micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), deepening domestic industrial collaboration in defence production.
