Dr S. Siddharth, IAS

In a significant administrative shake-up in Bihar, Dr. S. Siddharth, Additional Chief Secretary of the Education Department, has reportedly submitted his voluntary retirement (VRS) application, sending ripples through both bureaucratic and political circles. The 1991-batch IAS officer of the Bihar cadre filed the VRS on July 17, with the final decision now awaiting approval from Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Known for his discipline and innovative reforms in the education sector, Dr. Siddharth gained a reputation as a no-nonsense officer. His initiatives, such as strict enforcement of attendance policies in government schools and surprise video inspections from his office, highlighted his commitment to accountability and reform in public education. His proactive approach became a model of administrative engagement.

Beyond his official role, Dr. Siddharth was admired for his grassroots outreach. Often spotted at local tea stalls or preparing sweets at village shops during field visits, he cultivated a ‘people’s officer’ image that resonated strongly with citizens.

With his scheduled retirement due in November 2025, his early departure has ignited speculation of a political entry, possibly contesting from Nawada district. Reports indicate a potential Janata Dal (United) ticket, although no official announcement has been made. His resignation follows closely on the heels of IAS officer Dinesh Kumar Rai’s VRS, further fueling speculation of bureaucrats transitioning into politics ahead of elections.

While there has been no formal statement from Dr. Siddharth or the Bihar government, administrative corridors are abuzz with discussions, viewing his move as a well-timed strategy aligned with upcoming electoral developments.
