In a decisive push toward economic revitalisation and sustainable urban growth, the Andhra Pradesh government has fast-tracked a series of revenue-generating infrastructure projects across the state. Spearheaded by the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Department, the initiative covers 30 high-impact projects across various Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and aligns with the state’s long-term development blueprint, Swarnandhra Vision @ 2047.
The projects are being implemented through a mix of innovative financing models, including Public-Private Partnerships (PPP), the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM), and Viability Gap Funding (VGF), aiming to ensure financial viability while enhancing urban service delivery.
At a recent high-level review meeting held at the Secretariat, MA&UD Principal Secretary S. Suresh Kumar emphasised the strategic importance of leveraging underutilised urban assets. “We must adopt innovative land monetisation strategies and prepare mixed-use development models to unlock the potential of urban spaces. These initiatives will drive long-term sustainability and improve public services,” he stated.
The identified projects span critical sectors such as solid waste management (Waste-to-Energy or WTE), solar power, industrial water supply, urban mobility, and commercial redevelopment. Key approved projects include WTE facilities in Nellore, Kakinada-Rajahmundry, Kurnool, and Kadapa; a treated water transmission system in Visakhapatnam; floating solar installations in Nellore; and commercial complexes in cities like Guntur, Chittoor, and Kadapa.
Urban mobility has been identified as a top priority. The government plans to modernise city road infrastructure in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada under the HAM model to improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and support seamless urban transport. A ropeway project to the popular tourist spot Kailasagiri is also in the pipeline, reflecting the government’s intent to combine infrastructure development with tourism promotion.
The Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA) is leading a series of flagship initiatives, including the East Coast Habitat Centre at Madhurawada. Envisioned as a mixed-use urban node, the project will integrate residential, commercial, and institutional facilities. Other VMRDA-led projects include eco-cottages, a boat club at Gambhiram Lake, a 360° revolving restaurant, and a bay-view café at Kailasagiri—designed to boost tourism and eco-friendly urban recreation.
A first-of-its-kind immersive tourism zone, the Vizag Experience and Virtual Reality Arena, is also in development. The project aims to position Visakhapatnam as a national leader in digital tourism and urban entertainment.
The state’s rapid urbanisation and growing demand for sustainable infrastructure underscore the urgency of these initiatives. With a clear focus on job creation, investment attraction, and improved urban livability, Andhra Pradesh is positioning its cities as future-ready engines of economic growth.
