Chenab Bridge

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate projects worth ₹46,000 crore in Jammu and Kashmir today, aimed at enhancing connectivity, boosting tourism, creating jobs, and accelerating the movement of goods and people in and out of the region.

Modi has unveiled a transformative vision backed by major infrastructure initiatives to improve connectivity across the Union Territory. Ahead of his visit, the Chief Minister of J&K inspected preparations at the iconic Chenab Bridge—the world’s highest railway arch—underscoring the significance of the occasion.

Highlighting the region’s infrastructural transformation, the Prime Minister stated that 6th June would mark a special day for the people of Jammu and Kashmir, with the inauguration of projects that promise to improve lives and unlock vast development potential.

Among the major announcements, the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) stands out. With final safety inspections underway for the crucial Banihal-Katra section, seamless rail connectivity between Jammu and the Kashmir Valley is imminent. The USBRL features engineering marvels such as the Chenab Rail Bridge and Anji Khad Bridge—the latter being India’s first cable-stayed rail bridge in mountainous terrain.

The Prime Minister also emphasized the introduction of Vande Bharat trains between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Srinagar, which is set to boost spiritual tourism and generate local employment.

Road infrastructure is equally prioritized, with the Zojila Tunnel—Asia’s longest—now 70% complete. It is expected to ensure all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Ladakh. Additionally, the Jammu-Srinagar highway is undergoing four-laning, along with the development of bypasses and flyovers across the Union Territory.

Beyond connectivity, the region is also witnessing significant healthcare and urban development through projects like AIIMS in Awantipora and Jammu, and ongoing Smart City missions in both Srinagar and Jammu.
