Assam is emerging as a globally recognised tourism destination, with Charaideo Maidam earning UNESCO World Heritage status in 2024 and The New York Times ranking Assam fourth among its 52 Must-Visit Places for 2025. The state’s allure lies in its breathtaking natural beauty, diverse culture, rich wildlife, the majestic Brahmaputra River, lush tea gardens, and rolling blue hills. Tourism is a key focus sector of Advantage Assam 2.0, aimed at promoting Assam as an important, year-round travel destination for all kinds of visitors. Iconic attractions such as Kaziranga and Manas National Parks, along with the revered Kamakhya Temple, underscore Assam’s potential as a major tourism hub.
Heritage and cultural tourism have received a significant boost with Charaideo Maidam’s world heritage status and the upcoming transformation of Rang Ghar into an iconic heritage site. Majuli, the world’s largest river island, will continue to be a centre for cultural and artistic heritage. Traditional festivals such as Bihu, Raas, and Dol Jatra, along with Assam’s exquisite handlooms, handicrafts, and rich cuisine, will be promoted to create an immersive cultural experience. Wildlife tourism will be enhanced through more eco-friendly facilities at Kaziranga, Manas, and other national parks, which support conservation and local livelihoods.

Tea and golf tourism will be expanded, with tea tourism circuits that feature heritage tea bungalows, interactive teatasting sessions, and plantation tours. Existing golf courses will be promoted, while new golf resorts will cater to highend travellers and corporate retreats. River tourism will be enriched with luxury cruises on the Brahmaputra, seamlessly blending cultural, adventure, and wildlife experiences.

The hill districts of Dima Hasao and Karbi Anglong are emerging as alternative tourism destinations, offering stunning landscapes, waterfalls, trekking routes, and adventure activities. Eco-tourism and rural tourism will be encouraged, ensuring sustainability while benefiting local communities. Homestay and community-based tourism initiatives will provide visitors with authentic Assamese experiences while creating economic opportunities for rural and tribal communities. Local stakeholders will be trained in hospitality, traditional cooking, and storytelling, ensuring visitors experience the warmth and richness of Assamese culture.

Assam will also be positioned as a key MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) destination, offering a refreshing alternative to conventional business hubs with its serene landscapes and unique cultural heritage.
