In a major bureaucratic reshuffle, the Karnataka government has appointed IAS officer Anjum Parwez (1994 batch) as the Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) to the Chief Minister. Parwez, who is currently serving as the head of the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department, will now also oversee the Forest, Ecology & Environment Department. His tenure is expected to extend until February 2029, indicating a stable and prolonged administrative presence.
The appointment follows the sudden resignation of LK Atheeq, the outgoing ACS to the CM. A 1991-batch IAS officer, Atheeq had been serving on a contractual basis since his retirement in January 2025 — an exceptional extension highlighting his close rapport with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
Though stepping down from his official duties, Atheeq will continue as Chairperson of Bengaluru Business Corridor (BBC) Ltd, the Special Purpose Vehicle managing the crucial Peripheral Ring Road project. His resignation stems from a desire to focus on family and personal interests, including motorcycling and poetry.
A trusted advisor to the CM, Atheeq is known for his literary flair — notably translating Faiz Ahmed Faiz’s Urdu poetry into Kannada and the works of Kannada poet Kuvempu into English. A passionate biker, he has often been spotted riding his Triumph Bonneville Bobber and once rode a vintage 1942 BSA motorcycle featured in the film Sholay.
