Jaipur, the vibrant Pink City of India, is witnessing rapid urbanization and population growth. With an estimated population of 4.45 million and 15.55 lakh employment opportunities, the city experiences a daily travel demand of 36 lakh passenger trips. During peak hours, this number reaches an overwhelming 3.6 lakh trips. The increasing dependency on private vehicles has resulted in congested roads, pollution, and longer travel times. In response to these challenges, the Jaipur Metro Rail Corporation (JMRC) is working towards an efficient and sustainable public transportation system.
NEED FOR JAIPUR METRO EXPANSION
The first phase of the Jaipur Metro has been largely successful, providing a reliable transit option for thousands of daily commuters. However, with the growing population and large-scale infrastructure developments on the horizon, Phase II of the metro project is crucial. The second phase aims to ease congestion, reduce pollution, and promote a shift from private vehicles to public transport.

Recently, a high-level review meeting was held in the Secretariat, chaired by Vaibhav Galriya, Chairman & Managing Director of JMRC and Principal Secretary, UDH Department, Government of Rajasthan. The meeting focused on updating the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Phase II, evaluating the feasibility of metro expansion to new routes, and strategizing an efficient metro connectivity plan.

EXPANDING THE JAIPUR METRO NETWORK

During the meeting, Galriya emphasized the urgency of developing a comprehensive metro expansion plan. He directed JMRC officials to assess project costs and optimize resource utilization. He also stressed the importance of integrating Jaipur Metro with other transit networks, including Jaipur Development Authority’s (JDA) urban planning initiatives.
A key highlight of the discussion was the Jaipur Airport Metro Connectivity Plan. The Jaipur Airport, particularly its International Terminal-1, sees a high influx of passengers every month. Seamless metro connectivity to the airport will enhance convenience for travellers and boost the city’s accessibility. JMRC has been instructed to accelerate planning efforts and align the airport connectivity proposal with JDA’s urban development strategies.
FUNDING & FINANCING MODELS
Two major funding models have been proposed for Jaipur Metro Phase II: EPC Model (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction): The project will receive financial support from the Government of India (GoI), the Government of Rajasthan (GoR), JICA loans, and property development revenues.
BOT Model (Build-Operate-Transfer): A Public-Private Partnership (PPP) approach, where a private concessionaire will invest and operate the metro.

FUTURE OUTLOOK & CALL TO ACTION
The Jaipur Metro Phase II project is a transformative initiative that will redefine urban mobility in the city. With government backing, strategic planning, and technological advancements, the expansion of the metro system will provide a safe, fast, and eco-friendly transit option for Jaipur residents. The integration of the metro with Jaipur Airport and other key areas will further strengthen its impact.
As JMRC accelerates its efforts to finalize the DPR and initiate construction, it is imperative for all stakeholders, including urban planners, government authorities, and the public, to support this mission. A well-connected Jaipur Metro will boost economic growth, reduce traffic congestion, and enhance the quality of life for its citizens.
