Indian Railways is gearing up for a groundbreaking shift in green mobility with the introduction of hydrogen-powered trains. Manufactured by Chennai-based Integral Coach Factory (ICF), India’s first hydrogen train is expected to be rolled out this month. The hydrogen fuel train will play a crucial role in India’s zero-carbon emission goals by leveraging clean energy solutions.
The Ministry of Railways has allocated ₹2,800 crore ($337 million) in the 2023-24 fiscal year for the development of 35 hydrogen fuel cell-based trains. Unlike most countries that have developed hydrogen train engines with capacities between 500-600 horsepower (HP), India has set a global benchmark by designing a 1,200 HP hydrogen engine—the most powerful of its kind in the world.

The first hydrogen train will be deployed on Northern Railway’s Delhi Division, operating on the 89-km Jind–Sonipat section. With this initiative, India joins the ranks of Germany, France, China, and the UK in adopting hydrogen rail technology to drive sustainable and decarbonized transport solutions.
