Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao

On January 22, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked a decade of the transformative Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (Save the Daughter, Educate the Daughter) movement, which has significantly contributed to addressing gender disparities and empowering girls across India. Highlighting the initiative’s achievements, the Prime Minister commended the nationwide efforts that have brought about cultural and social change.

Launched on January 22, 2015, in Panipat, Haryana, the programme was designed to combat gender imbalance and declining child-sex ratios. Over the years, it has grown into a community-driven movement with remarkable outcomes. The national sex ratio at birth improved from 918 in 2014-15 to 930 in 2023-24, while the gross enrolment ratio of girls at the secondary education level increased from 75.51% to 78% in the same period. Additionally, institutional deliveries rose from 61% to 97.3%, and first-trimester antenatal care registrations surged to 80.5%, reflecting the initiative’s wide-reaching impact.

In a series of posts on social media platform X, PM Modi emphasized the grassroots participation that has made this movement a success. “Over the past decade, Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao has become a transformative, people-powered initiative, drawing participation from all walks of life. It has played a key role in overcoming gender biases and ensuring access to education and opportunities for girls to achieve their dreams,” he wrote.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged the contributions of stakeholders, community organizations, and citizens, urging continued efforts to create a society free of gender discrimination. “Together, we can ensure greater progress and opportunities for India’s daughters,” he added.

The Ministry of Women and Child Development has announced a series of nationwide celebrations to commemorate the movement’s anniversary. Beginning January 22 and running until March 8—International Women’s Day—the events will include rallies, cultural performances, and felicitation ceremonies for women achievers. Union ministers, senior women officers, Anganwadi workers, and representatives from international organizations like UNICEF, UN Women, and the World Bank will participate in the inaugural event in Delhi.
