The Salt Lake Electronics Complex, known as SALTLEC, is a major centre for IT and electronics in Kolkata, located in Sector V of Bidhannagar, also called Salt Lake City. Created in 1989, it is recognised as India’s first fully integrated electronics complex. Since its beginning, it has played a crucial role in West Bengal’s technology sector, contributing significantly to Kolkata’s place in the IT industry nationally and globally.
An Integrated Environment for Technology
The complex was designed to bring together all parts of the electronics and IT sectors. From hardware production to software development, it was built to be a complete environment for technology work. This made SALTLEC attractive to companies involved in everything from hardware manufacturing to software solutions.
Back in 1999, the electronics complex was bustling with around 160 companies, all packed into a tidy 135 acres. By 2006, the number had grown, with over 170 firms in IT, ITeS, biotech, and pharma setting up shop. Fast forward to 2019, and SALTLEC has expanded to a sprawling 150 acres, now home to 63 electronics units, more than 200 IT and ITeS companies, and a lively mix of MSMEs contributing to its dynamic ecosystem.
Today, it supports a broad range of activities, including IT consulting, software development, and research, making it a core part of Kolkata’s technology landscape.
