As the curtains draw on 2024, India stands at the forefront of a digital revolution, driven by groundbreaking initiatives led by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY). From harnessing the transformative power of artificial intelligence to bolstering the semiconductor industry, the country is scripting a compelling narrative of progress and self-reliance. Here’s a look at the key milestones that defined India’s digital growth in 2024.
Semiconductor Manufacturing: Pioneering Self-Reliance
The year began with a transformative leap under the Semicon India Programme, as four major semiconductor manufacturing projects received approval, representing an investment of over ₹1.29 lakh crore. This initiative marked a giant step towards India’s goal of becoming a global semiconductor hub.
- Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) partnered with PSMC, Taiwan, to establish a ₹91,526 crore Semiconductor Fab facility with a production capacity of 50,000 wafers per month.
- A ₹27,120 crore OSAT (Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test) facility by TEPL set the stage for indigenous semiconductor packaging technologies.
- CG Power and Industrial Solutions Limited partnered with global leaders from the US, Japan, and Thailand to launch a ₹7,584 crore OSAT facility.
- Kaynes Technology India Limited advanced the mission with a ₹3,307 crore OSAT facility in Gujarat, producing over 6.33 million chips daily.
These projects are poised to generate tens of thousands of jobs and position India as a leader in semiconductor manufacturing.

IndiaAI Mission: Pioneering Artificial Intelligence for All
India’s quest to lead the global AI narrative took a decisive turn with the IndiaAI Mission. The National AI Portal (INDIAai) emerged as a one-stop destination for insights into AI-related developments, startups, and innovations. With over 2,806 articles, 334 videos, and a vast repository of resources, the portal embodies India’s commitment to fostering an AI-driven future.

Key initiatives like AIRAWAT, a supercomputing platform with 200 petaflops of mixed-precision AI capacity, secured India’s place on the Top 500 Global Supercomputing List, ranking 75th. Meanwhile, India’s leadership in the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) highlighted its role in steering ethical AI development.

BHASHINI: Bridging Language Barriers in the Digital World
The BHASHINI platform, a cornerstone of the National Language Translation Mission, broke barriers by delivering translation services in 22 scheduled Indian languages. With over 100 million inferences monthly and 700,000+ mobile app downloads, BHASHINI proved to be a game-changer in making digital services accessible across linguistic divides.
Empowering Through Digital Literacy and Skill Development
The Pradhan Mantri Gramin Digital Saksharta Abhiyan (PMGDISHA) exceeded its target, training 6.39 crore individuals in rural India. Additionally, the government empowered 18,209 youth from SC/ST and economically weaker sections in 81 aspirational districts, equipping them with skills for employment and entrepreneurship.
In the electronics sector, nearly 5 lakh candidates were trained under specialised skill development schemes, of which over 3.7 lakh received certifications, creating a skilled workforce ready to meet the demands of a digital future.
National Supercomputing Mission: Powering Research
The Prime Minister’s unveiling of PARAM Rudra supercomputers underscored India’s growing prowess in research and innovation. With a combined computing capacity of 32 petaflops, these supercomputers are empowering over 10,000 researchers and advancing studies in physics, earth sciences, and cosmology.
Driving Innovation with Modified Electronics Manufacturing Clusters (EMC 2.0)
Under the EMC 2.0 Scheme, projects in Telangana, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka attracted investments exceeding ₹20,871 crore, creating employment for over 75,000 individuals. These clusters are hubs for innovation, supporting startups, and driving India’s vision of becoming an electronics manufacturing powerhouse.
Cybersecurity and Resilience
With 388 organizations onboarded to the Cyber Swachhta Kendra and the successful completion of the 45th batch of Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) training, MeitY fortified India’s cybersecurity framework, ensuring a resilient digital landscape.
India’s Digital Future: A Beacon for the World
From semiconductor manufacturing to AI leadership, language inclusivity, and digital literacy, 2024 was a transformative year for India’s digital journey. As MeitY lays the foundation for a robust digital ecosystem, the country is poised to lead the global technology narrative, fostering innovation, inclusion, and self-reliance.
India’s digital revolution is not just a story of growth—it’s a testament to the nation’s resilience, innovation, and vision for a brighter future.
