In a significant technological leap, the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) has successfully completed one of the largest cloud migrations by a government organisation in India. The GeM portal has transitioned from the Tata Communications Limited (TCL)-run Government Community Cloud (GCC) to the MeitY-empaneled Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) of Amazon Web Services (AWS), in alignment with the Managed Service Provider contract between GeM and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).
The migration is set to transform the platform’s scalability, user experience, and operational resilience, offering a secure, reliable, and high-availability infrastructure. The Department of Commerce stated that the initiative aligns with the government’s vision of leveraging technology to enhance efficiency and transparency in public procurement.
Pankaj Gupta, AWS’s Country Leader for India and South Asia (Enterprises, Public Sector, Healthcare, and Education), remarked, “The Government e-Marketplace, poised to become the world’s largest public procurement platform, now benefits from AWS’s robust, scalable, and secure cloud infrastructure. Alongside TCS, this migration underscores GeM’s commitment to transparency, efficiency, and inclusivity in public procurement for government organisations and public sector units.”

GeM was conceptualised following recommendations from the Group of Secretaries and endorsed by the Hon’ble Prime Minister to establish a dedicated e-market for procuring goods and services by government organizations, departments, and PSUs. Developed in a record five months, GeM facilitates the online procurement of common-use goods and services, employing tools such as e-bidding, reverse e-auction, and demand aggregation to achieve optimal value. The platform emphasizes transparency, efficiency, and speed in public procurement.
