PMAY-G Scheme

As of December 13, 2024, a remarkable milestone has been achieved under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G), with the completion of 2.68 crore houses across rural India. Out of these, 72.66 lakh homes are registered solely in the name of women, while 1.22 crore houses are jointly owned by both husband and wife. This translates to 1.95 crore houses, or an impressive 73% of all completed homes under the scheme, being owned by women. This data was shared in the Lok Sabha by Minister of State for Rural Development, Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, through a written response.

The PMAY-G guidelines emphasize prioritizing women in ownership. Sanctioning homes in the name of women or jointly with their husbands is a core feature of the scheme, designed to empower women in rural households. The government has also issued an advisory ensuring women are included as owners in sanction letters, even in cases where initial ownership details may list only male family members. Such proactive measures underscore the scheme’s focus on gender equity and women’s empowerment.

Launched on April 1, 2016, PMAY-G aims to fulfil the dream of “Housing for All” in rural India by providing pucca houses with basic amenities. The scheme’s cumulative target is to construct 4.95 crore houses by March 2029, benefiting eligible rural households. To date, 3.33 crore houses have been allotted to states and union territories, of which 3.22 crore houses have been sanctioned, and **2.68 crore have been successfully completed.

Women-Centric Livelihood Opportunities

PMAY-G beneficiaries, particularly women, are also linked with livelihood initiatives through Self Help Groups (SHGs) under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM). SHGs not only foster financial inclusion but also create employment and entrepreneurial opportunities for women.

To date, 10.05 crore rural households have been mobilized into 90.87 lakh SHGs across the country. Through the DAY-NRLM scheme, these groups gain access to bank loans that empower members to invest in small-scale businesses and income-generating activities. Since the inception of the mission, ₹9.74 lakh crore has been disbursed as loans to women-led SHGs.

Impact and Way Forward

PMAY-G exemplifies a balanced approach to rural development by addressing both housing needs and socio-economic empowerment, especially for women. The scheme has not only advanced rural infrastructure but also bolstered women’s roles in household ownership and financial independence. As India moves towards the 2029 target of 4.95 crore houses, the synergy between PMAY-G and DAY-NRLM initiatives will continue to play a transformative role in uplifting rural communities and driving sustainable development.
