Nokia has announced a five-year extension of its partnership with Microsoft Azure, focusing on providing advanced data centre routers and switches. This renewed agreement will bolster the scalability and reliability of Microsoft’s global network infrastructure.
The extended collaboration will see Nokia’s global presence grow to over 30 countries, solidifying its role as a key supplier of Microsoft’s worldwide cloud services. The companies will continue their joint efforts on open-source SONiC (Software for Open Networking in the Cloud), with Nokia enhancing SONiC’s capabilities for high-capacity network roles within data centres, including chassis-based support.
Under the terms of the agreement, Nokia will deliver its 7250 IXR-10e platforms to facilitate multi-terabit interconnectivity within Microsoft’s data centres. The deal also includes the continued supply of Nokia’s custom-designed top-of-rack switches, which are crucial to Azure’s network expansion. These innovations will support Microsoft’s transition to 400GE connectivity, meeting the rising demand for data traffic.

Deployment of the Nokia 7250 IXR-10e platform is set to begin in February. Vach Kompella, Nokia’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of IP Networks, expressed enthusiasm about the expanded scope and geographical reach of the partnership, emphasizing the significant role Nokia will play in enhancing the scalability and reliability of Microsoft’s data centres.

David Maltz, Technical Fellow and Corporate Vice President of Microsoft Azure Networking reflected on the successful six-year partnership, noting that Nokia’s SONiC-enabled routers have been instrumental in the expansion of Azure’s network, meeting the high-quality demands of their customers.
