Mines Ministry, IEA

The Ministry of Mines, Government of India, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the International Energy Agency (IEA) to collaborate in the area of critical minerals. This strategic partnership will provide India with valuable access to reliable data, comprehensive analysis, and policy recommendations, enhancing its ability to make informed decisions and manage critical mineral resources effectively.

The IEA, operating under the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), will support India in aligning its policies and investment strategies in the critical mineral sector with global standards and best practices. By drawing on the experiences of IEA member countries, India aims to accelerate its transition towards a sustainable and resilient energy framework.

The collaboration will also focus on capacity building and the exchange of knowledge between India and IEA member states. Through joint initiatives in data collection, modelling, and analysis, India’s technical expertise and institutional infrastructure in the critical minerals sector are expected to strengthen significantly. The agreement outlines plans for joint research projects, workshops, and training programs to promote innovation in technology development, efficient extraction methods, and advanced recycling techniques for critical minerals.

The Union Cabinet approved the proposal for this MoU on 3 October 2024. The agreement was signed by Shri V. L. Kantha Rao, Secretary of the Ministry of Mines, and Dr Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the IEA. The official exchange of the MoU took place at Shastri Bhawan in New Delhi, in the presence of Union Minister of Mines Shri G. Kishan Reddy and other senior officials.
