India and Guyana have signed ten Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at enhancing collaboration across various critical sectors, including hydrocarbons and agriculture. The agreements were inked during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s historic visit to Guyana, marking the first time in 56 years that an Indian Prime Minister has visited the South American nation.
One of the key MoUs focuses on cooperation in the hydrocarbon sector, encompassing crude oil sourcing, natural gas collaboration, infrastructure development, capacity building, and expertise sharing across the hydrocarbon value chain. Highlighting Guyana’s potential role in India’s energy security, PM Modi emphasized the need for a long-term partnership between the two nations. “A blueprint will be prepared to strengthen our cooperation. The MoU signed today will further solidify our engagement,” Modi stated during a joint press conference with Guyanese President Irfaan Ali. He also acknowledged Guyana’s participation in global initiatives led by India, such as the International Solar Alliance, Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, and the Global Biofuel Alliance.
The MoUs were signed in the presence of President Ali, Prime Minister Mark Phillips, and over a dozen cabinet ministers, who joined the ceremonial welcome for PM Modi.

In the agriculture sector, the signed agreement aims to foster cooperation through joint activities, scientific exchanges, and knowledge-sharing to advance agriculture and allied fields. Highlighting India’s support, Modi mentioned the successful provision of millet seeds to Guyana last year, which contributed to enhancing food security in the region. “We will further collaborate to increase the cultivation of rice, sugarcane, corn, soya, and other crops,” he added.

This visit signifies a deepening of ties between the two nations, underscoring their shared commitment to sustainable development and mutual growth in key areas such as energy and agriculture. The agreements are expected to bolster bilateral relations and pave the way for future partnerships.
