The Department of Science and Technology (DST) organised a two-day Climate Change Conclave from May 27th to 28th, 2024, at the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. The conclave convened experts nationwide to discuss the imperative for developing foundational Artificial Intelligence (AI) models tailored for climate modelling in India.

Addressing the conclave, Prof. Abhay Karandikar, Secretary of DST, underscored the pivotal role of DST’s National Mission for Sustaining Himalayan Ecosystem (NMSHE) and the National Mission on Strategic Knowledge for Climate Change (NMSKCC) in advancing research and development in this field. He emphasised the necessity of prioritising AI models specific to India’s climate challenges.

During the event, the draft executive summary of ‘District Level Climate Risk Assessment for India’ was released by the DST Secretary. He advocated for indigenous climate models rooted in data to enhance climate change understanding and address its impacts on agriculture, water, and the environment.

Dr. Akhilesh Gupta, Senior Advisor at DST, reflected on the evolution of DST’s Climate Change Programme and its contributions to the National Actions Plan for Climate Change (NAPCC). He stressed the importance of collaborative efforts across communities to devise effective solutions for future generations.

Dr. Anita Gupta, Head of Climate, Energy, and Sustainable Technology (CEST) at DST, highlighted the urgency of addressing climate change, noting that a significant portion of the global population is already vulnerable to its effects. She discussed DST’s initiatives under NAPCC and its participation in global efforts like Mission Innovation for clean energy solutions.

Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director of IIT Delhi, spotlighted the Centre of Excellence on climate change modelling at the institute and its contributions to innovative mitigation technologies.

The conclave saw participation from climate change experts representing various institutions including IIT Delhi, IIT Bhubaneswar, Banaras Hindu University, University of Delhi, Kashmir University, IISc, University of Allahabad, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, India Meteorological Department, ICRISAT, and DST Centres of Excellence, alongside DST officials.
