
Qualcomm Inc., a leading US-based wireless technology developer, inaugurated its cutting-edge design center in Chennai on Thursday. The ceremony, graced by Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of Railways, Communications, Electronics & IT, and Cristiano Amon, President & CEO of Qualcomm Inc., marked the official opening of the facility, established with an investment of ₹177.27 crore.
The newly inaugurated design center will specialize in pioneering wireless connectivity solutions, with a primary focus on complementing WiFi technologies through innovative developments. It is poised to significantly contribute to Qualcomm’s global Research and Development endeavors in 5G Cellular technology, reaffirming the company’s commitment to leading the wireless communications industry.
Boosting Employment and ‘Make in India’ Initiative

With the expectation of generating up to 1,600 employment opportunities for skilled technology professionals, the launch of the design center is anticipated to further bolster India’s dynamic workforce. This strategic investment aligns with the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative and promises to foster a robust indigenous design ecosystem.

Cristiano Amon emphasized the pivotal role of the center in advancing Qualcomm’s wireless products, particularly WiFi technologies. He highlighted India’s thriving IT industry and growth-oriented policy ecosystem as conducive factors for nurturing tech talent.

Qualcomm’s 6G University Research India Program
In tandem with India’s Bharat 6G Vision, Qualcomm unveiled the inaugural edition of the Qualcomm 6G University Research India Program. This initiative aims to bolster academic research leadership in emerging 6G technologies. The program, an extension of Qualcomm’s existing university research endeavors, will support select professors from prestigious institutions such as IITs and IISc.
The first cohort of 17 academicians will receive funding totaling approximately $1.02 million over three years. The program, structured across two phases, includes research engagement, regular interactions, workshops, and talks by Qualcomm R&D experts.
Fostering Collaborative R&D
Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw underscored the importance of collaborative R&D efforts between the private sector and academia in shaping the future of wireless technology, including 6G. He commended Qualcomm’s initiative, stating that it would inspire and support India’s engineering talent in addressing the challenges of tomorrow.
The minister further disclosed discussions with Cristiano Amon on potential collaborations between the Government of India and Qualcomm across various sectors, including 6G technology.
