Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, R K Singh, and Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Dr. Virendra Kumar, jointly inaugurated the groundbreaking ceremony for the Barethi Solar Power Project of NTPC REL in Madhya Pradesh on March 10, 2024.

Situated at the Barethi Renewable Energy Park in Chhatarpur District of Madhya Pradesh, the 630 MW solar project represents an investment of Rs. 3,200 crores. Upon completion, it is expected to illuminate over 3 lakh households. The project falls under Mode-8 of the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy’s Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Power Parks scheme.

Apart from adding green power to the grid, the project aims to ensure affordable electricity for the masses. Furthermore, its construction generates direct and indirect employment opportunities in the region.

This initiative signifies a significant stride towards sustainable power generation, with the project projected to curtail 12 lakh tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually. This reduction aligns with the nation’s climate commitments and green energy targets.

NTPC Limited, India’s largest integrated power utility with over 75 GW installed capacity, currently meets 25% of the country’s total electricity demand. By 2032, NTPC aims to elevate its non-fossil-based capacity to 45%-50% of its portfolio, which is anticipated to reach 130 GW, including 60 GW of renewable energy capacity.
