In a move aimed at expediting the widespread integration of grid-connected rooftop solar systems, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has mandated distribution companies (discoms) to streamline the implementation and application procedures. The directives issued by MNRE eliminate unnecessary complexities, paving the way for a smoother process.

Under the new guidelines, the MNRE has outlined specific requirements at different stages of the application process. To obtain technical feasibility approval, consumers are now only required to submit any electricity bill from the past six months. During the project commissioning and net-metering stages, applicants need to provide a completion report, a photograph showcasing the rooftop solar installation, and a formal agreement between the consumer and the vendor. The completion report should include details such as the wattage, quantity, and name of solar modules, inverter make and wattage, the identity of the installation vendor, and the submission of a photograph depicting the installed system.

Crucially, the MNRE has instructed all relevant discoms and implementing agencies to refrain from requesting any additional documents from applicants. This initiative recognizes the immense potential and multiple benefits of decentralized solar energy generation through rooftop solar and aims to simplify the installation process.

In addition to these measures, the MNRE has directed discoms to ensure an ample supply of smart meters or net meters, thereby preventing delays in project commissioning. This proactive step eliminates the need for consumers to purchase and have meters tested by laboratories.

This announcement comes on the heels of the Ministry of External Affairs notifying offshore wind energy lease rules in December 2023. The rules define specific lease areas, with the lease remaining valid for three years, allowing for resource measurement, study, or survey activities. The combined efforts underscore the government’s commitment to advancing renewable energy initiatives and embracing sustainable solutions.
