In a significant development, Jatinder Singh Aulakh, a 1997-batch IPS officer and former state intelligence chief of Punjab Police, has been appointed as the chairman of Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC). The announcement was made on Wednesday, and the appointment of Aulakh, who retired as additional director general police (ADGP), received the clearance from Punjab Governor Banwari Lal Purohit.
The PPSC, responsible for recruiting class I officers for various state departments, has been without a regular chairman since March last year, adversely affecting the appointment process. Aulakh’s appointment brings leadership to the commission, which has faced challenges in maintaining regularity since the retirement of its previous chairperson, Jagbans Singh Powar, in March last year.
Jatinder Singh Aulakh, hailing from Bargari village in Faridkot district, has a distinguished career in Punjab Police, having served in crucial roles, including inspector general and intelligence chief. Notably, Aulakh had previously been selected by the same commission as a DSP in 1990.

Known for his integrity and soft-spoken skills, Aulakh, a Punjab Public School (PPS), Nabha pass-out, enjoys a strong reputation and has been a favorite of various ruling dispensations, including the Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal-led governments.

Aulakh’s career highlights include being the security in-charge of the chief minister’s office during the tenure of the late Chief Minister Harcharan Singh Brar. He assumed this responsibility following a security overhaul due to the assassination of CM Beant Singh.

Upon his retirement on January 31, 2023, Aulakh was promoted to ADGP. Post-retirement, he has been actively involved in volunteering at Pingalwara Charitable Trust, Amritsar, emphasizing his commitment to social work.

Expressing gratitude for the opportunity, Aulakh stated, “As PPSC chairman, I will strive hard to bring transparency in the entire functioning of the commission.” His rich experience includes serving as the district police chief in various districts and holding key positions such as ‘Commissioner of Police, Amritsar’ and ‘CP, Ludhiana’ during his tenure as ‘DIG’.
