In a recent development, Mr. Ajay Kumar Bhalla, a senior bureaucrat of the 1984-batch Assam-Meghalaya cadre Indian Administrative Service (IAS), currently serving as Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), has been appointed to the additional role of Secretary of the Department of Border Management. This decision was conveyed through an official order issued by the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT). The appointment is effective immediately and will remain in force until the appointment of a regular incumbent or until further orders, whichever occurs earlier.

Mr. Bhalla has been at the helm of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) since August 23, 2019, and has a distinguished career in the civil services. He possesses a Master’s degree in Botany (M Sc) from the University of Delhi, an MBA from the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, and an M Phil in social sciences from the Punjab University.

Throughout his career, Mr. Bhalla has held several significant positions within the Union government, showcasing his administrative prowess. Before his tenure as Secretary of MHA, he served as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the same Ministry. His previous assignments include Secretary of the Ministry of Power from July 2017 to July 2019, Director General of Foreign Trade, Additional Secretary of Department of Commerce, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Coal, and Director (Ports) in the Department of Shipping, among other key roles.

This appointment reflects Mr. Bhalla’s continued commitment to public service and his exemplary track record in various crucial positions within the government. It is expected that he will bring his extensive experience and expertise to his new role as Secretary of the Department of Border Management.
