Veera Rana

In a significant decision made by the government of Madhya Pradesh under the leadership of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the state’s 1988 batch IAS officer, Veera Rana, has been entrusted with the Additional Charge of Chief Secretary. This historic appointment makes her the second woman bureaucrat in the history of Madhya Pradesh to assume the role of Chief Secretary.

The government issued an official order on the night of November 29, formalising Ms. Rana’s elevation to the position of chief secretary, and she is set to assume office today. Currently, Mrs. Rana holds the position of Chairperson of the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education and also serves as the additional charge of the state’s agriculture production commissioner.

Veera Rana will succeed Iqbal Singh Bains, a 1985 batch IAS officer, who is retiring from service after receiving two extensions. Mr. Bains was initially set to retire on November 30, 2022, but his retirement date was extended first to May 31, 2023, and then again to November 30, in light of the assembly elections.

Before Ms. Rana, in the early 1990s, the distinguished 1960 batch IAS officer Nirmala Buch held the distinction of serving as the state’s first woman chief secretary during 1991-1992. Sadly, Ms. Buch passed away in July of this year, having made significant contributions throughout her career, including roles such as Chief Electoral Officer of Madhya Pradesh State, Additional Chief Secretary of Sports and Youth Welfare Department, Director General in the Academy of Administration, Cottage and Village Industries Department, and General Administration Personnel Department.
